Wettbewerb Ilirai SquareNË HIJE NË QYTETI With respect to the contemporary neighbourhood and the historic context, the new Ilirai Square in Durres becomes a further piece of mosaic in the development of the city. The design of the new square responds to the existing arrangement of powers in the persisting urban situation: City hall, Mosque, Prefecture, Palace of Culture. We may even call it a "classic" situation unlike the Agora in former times. Thus dominated by performing powers and adjacent to precious archaeological excavations and sites - probably even beneath Ilirai Square - the situation asks for one goal: enhancing the multi-use options and amenity values of existing open space while negotiating with the context. Due to the fact that the climate allows a mediterranean way of life throughout the year we provide a space for people, where they can sit, talk, perform, merchandise, relax and therefore enrich the city. Some facts dominate the situation: the awareness and the need for an architectural open space and the vital necessity for ambience and micro climate as a shelter. This goal will be achieved through the introduction of a system which accommodates necessary infrastructure as well as plants, trees, fountains and various installations providing shade and enhancing the amenity value. Groves of planes or sycamore trees (Platanus orientalis) and vertical green formed by plants and twiners are positioned in an order to allow for visual orientation. These generate a whole set of different qualities for the square. Within this park related plaza people will find emblematic furniture especially designed for this site. Altogether creating a unique green "volume" and a green roof for people. The New Ilirai Square will become iconographic for Durres and an incentive for the future. Mitarbeit: Michael Klein |
